MacART is thrilled to share that on June 30, 2025, MacART member Dr. Peter Rosenbaum was named to the Order of Canada for his transformative contributions to the field of childhood disability!
The Order of Canada is Canada’s highest civilian honour that recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication, and service by individuals whose service has shaped the nation in lasting ways.
Among Peter’s accolades is that he is globally recognized for championing a strengths-based, family-focused approach that has changed clinical practice, informed health policy, and improved quality of life for children and youth with disabilities. In 1989, he co-founded the CanChild Centre for Childhood-Onset Disability Research at McMaster, which has shaped provincial health and education policies, fostered national partnerships with Indigenous communities, and led international collaborations in countries including Australia, the Netherlands, Brazil, Poland, Iran and India. In 2012, Peter and colleague Jan Willem Gorter published a paper, “The F-words in Childhood Disability: I swear this is how we should think!“, which builds on concepts from the World Health Organization to use plain language to reframe childhood development around six “f-words”: functioning, fitness, fun, friends, family, and future.
