New publication estimating the prevalence of autism among adults living in Canada

On June 24, 2025, a publication was released in the journal BMJ Open titled “Prevalence of autism among adults in Canada: results from a simulation modelling study”, with MacART Co-Director Dr. Stelios Georgiades and MacART member Dr. Mackenzie Salt among the co-authors.

This publication estimates the prevalence of autism among adults living in Canada using a Monte Carlo simulation modelling approach including multiple sources to derive required estimates for analyses.

Dr. Mackenzie Salt shared a comment about the paper, “This study is the first estimate of the prevalence of autism in adults in Canada. While there are limitations to the model used, it is a solid base for further work and provides researchers, policymakers, and services providers with an estimate of how many Autistic adults are living in Canada to allow for better planning and decision-making.”
